Dewdrop by Katie O’Neill is a predictable yet adorable read about an axolotl (I know, I was surprised too!) whose kindness and confidence helps her friends make the most of the Sports Fair. The illustrations within the book verge on children’s manga comic book, which is delightful and visually engaging.
What’s great about this book is that it teaches children confidence without being egocentric. The axolotl protagonist believes she’s an amazing cheerleader, and tells her friends that they are also amazing at anything they try. Her friends learn that the competition isn’t about beating every one else, it’s about achieving your own personal best.
What I like most about this book is that is shows the wonders of complimenting others. Although the book is simple and straight forward, the message is clear and the characters are interesting to look at.
I’m happy to give this book a 4 star review.
The books listed were sent to me by the publisher through NetGalley. Only books I’ve rated as 3 stars or higher make it onto my blog. Thank you to all the wonderful authors, illustrators and publishers for allowing me to review their books pre-publication. I hope their beautiful words and pictures inspire all the children they reach.
